Research note | Checked October 4, 2026
AI frameworks are resources, not approval.
A credit union can use a framework to organize its questions. It still needs to decide what the specific workflow may do, which sources it may use and who reviews the result.
What the primary sources say.
NCUA's AI page says it has no AI-specific rules and supervises use through its existing technology-neutral framework. It links practical NIST and financial-sector resources. Read NCUA's AI resources and supervision FAQ.
NIST describes its AI Risk Management Framework as voluntary. Its current page says version 1.0 is being revised and links the generative-AI profile. Read the NIST framework page.
Treasury announced financial-sector AI resources on February 19, 2026, including an adaptation of NIST for financial-services use. Its announcement describes scalable, practical resources. Read Treasury's announcement.
Connect the framework to a decision.
Our recommendation: choose one workflow and map relevant framework questions to the file your reviewer needs. Record the source boundary, owner, test cases, unresolved questions and the permitted use decision. Keep a framework reference distinct from evidence that a control actually works.
For a procedure workflow, that could mean retaining controlling versions and unanswered questions. For a pilot, it could mean retaining the expected cases and the reviewer's judgment about the answers. The institution decides which controls and review depth fit its risks.
What this note does not establish.
A resource link is not a certification requirement. Completing a checklist does not establish legal compliance, effective controls or permission to use AI in production. This note is not a legal opinion or an examination.
A file to inspect. A decision your institution owns.
Public tools run on supplied inputs and fictional examples. An engagement uses only sources you are allowed to share. We do not connect to a core, compile or execute institution code, take a financial action, certify compliance, give a legal opinion or claim achieved savings.
